What do Salve Regina students do for fun on-campus? back to top
They get involved! There are plenty of on-campus activities and events that keep Salve Regina students busy and happy. The Student Activities Office (SAO) – overseen by the director of student activities - assists student organizations in providing social, cultural, and educational programming for the campus. One of Salve Regina's most popular student organizations is the Campus Activities Board (CAB), which keeps campus vibrant by planning concerts, karaoke and movie nights, live comedy shows, dances, off-campus trips, and recreational activities.  Salve Regina also has a strong intramural program, community service clubs, a dance company, a campus ministry club, music and theatre groups, academic and professional clubs, a Student Government Association, various political, social and environmental groups, and even surfing and outdoor adventure clubs. If none of this interests you, you can always shoot pool in the Student Center or take a pilates or yoga class in Rodgers Recreation Center. If you're still not satisfied, you can start your own club, or you can sit in your room in solitude, until someone yanks you out of there and gets you movin'!

Salve Regina is an NCAA Division III athletic program. We belong to the Commonwealth Coast Conference, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, the New England Football Conference and the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association. GO SEAHAWKS!

Does Salve Regina offer athletic scholarships? back to top
No, like all Division III athletic programs, Salve Regina does not award athletic scholarships.

Is there a strong intramural program/opportunities to stay active? back to top
Yes. For those of you who would like to stay physically active, but not necessarily at the varsity level, there an plenty of options. Our intramural program features traditional sport offerings, such as tennis, basketball, soccer, and softball and more alternative ones, such as flag football, beach volleyball and ultimate frisbee. The Rodgers Recreation Center also houses a fully equipped fitness center (treadmills, free weights, nautilus, stationary bikes, elliptical machines, jump ropes, medicine balls…and the list goes on), a basketball court, an aerobics studio, and a dance studio. Pilates, yoga, aerobics, dance and strength building classes are also offered throughout the academic year. If the great outdoors is more your thing, don't despair: students have access to tennis courts, an outdoor basketball court, athletic fields, a beach volleyball court, the expansive Atlantic Ocean, and some the most beautiful running/walking/biking routes you'll ever aerobocize upon. In other words, we dare declare, if you're lazy here, you'd be lazy anywhere!

What's the city of Newport like? back to top
If you like the ocean, magnificent architecture, and vitality, you'll love Newport!  Newport, known as the city-by-the-sea and one of the best sailing spots on the east coast, is recognized all over the world as a top-notch destination. When students are not in class, studying or participating in on-campus activities, they'll head to Thames Street to check out a weekend festival, visit an art gallery, catch a movie, browse the quaint boutiques, or just grab a cup of coffee or a bite to eat. The world famous Cliff Walk – a popular walking path and study spot for students – is literally right in our backyard. And, where Salve Regina's campus ends, Ocean Drive begins. This 10-mile seaside drive is ideal for biking, jogging, rollerblading, or even just taking a joy ride after a stressful exam. Salve Regina students also take advantage of being just minutes from Easton's Beach, whether heading there in their swimsuits or in their snowsuits!

Are freshmen allowed to have cars on campus? back to top
Sorry, no cars until sophomore year. But, not having a car on campus freshman year doesn't mean you'll be stranded in your room toying with the idea of hitchhiking home. We do let you off campus, and we even help you get there! All students have free access to charming and environmentally-conscious trolleys through our contract with the Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority (RIPTA). These trolleys make scheduled stops on campus from 6am - 8pm Monday through Saturday and from 10am - 8pm on Sunday, and travel throughout Newport, and all of Rhode Island. When the trolleys stop running at 8:00 pm each night, Salve Regina's own shuttle service begins, and runs until 1 a.m.  So, even without your own car, you'll have no trouble getting to Wal-Mart for essentials, to Thames Street for a Venti Caramel Macchiotto, to URI to visit a friend, to the train or bus station, or even just to class on a rainy day.

What types of jobs are available for students? back to top
Basically, Salve Regina students can either be employed on campus through a work-study position or off campus at one of the many Newport restaurants, shops or businesses. Work-study students apply for jobs in various campus departments, and typically work about 9-12 hours per week. These positions tend to be more flexible than off campus ones since, when creating students' work schedules, the university takes course schedules, final exams, and holidays into consideration, whereas an off campus employer may not.

Are Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC)  programs available? back to top
Army ROTC has been offered at Salve Regina University continuously since 1994. To begin ROTC as a freshman, students must select a military science course as an elective during course registration. To learn more about this option, call 401-847-6650, ext. 2206.

Are students required to live on-campus? What are the residence halls like? back to top
All freshmen and sophomore students are required to live on campus. Since Salve Regina boasts very unique housing options - ranging from newly constructed suites to refurbished mansions overlooking the ocean (yes, your friends and even your parents will be jealous!) – many students choose to stay on campus after sophomore year. Nonetheless, juniors and seniors do have the option to stay on campus or move off.  Because tourists swarm Newport in the summer months and then return to their realities during the off-season (September through May - when school is in session), Newport landlords cater to Salve Regina students during this time. As a result, Salve Regina's upperclassmen who choose to reside off-campus often find attractive housing options at shockingly reasonable prices. To learn more about residence life at Salve Regina, and to view some of our residence halls, visit the office of residential life.

How is housing determined for freshmen? back to top
Yet another reason for you procrastinators to change your ways!  For first year students, housing is determined by date of deposit; the earlier we receive your deposit, the more likely you are to be placed in your dream room!
